Have you ever had the sudden urge in the middle of the night to set new goals and completely rearrange your life? For example, set a 5am alarm to work out or wake up earlier. But when that morning comes, you end up snoozing the alarm and going back to sleep because you didn’t have the motivation to get up and do it. If this sounds like you, there may be something you lack in your life — self-discipline.
During the past few months of my journey to getting my life back on track, I started a monthly tradition to work on a new skill. For example, in June, I wanted to work on bringing more peace into my life. For August, I wanted to work on being more disciplined. But to do that, I needed to learn what having self-discipline truly meant.
So, What Exactly Is Self-Discipline?
I’ve always thought you only needed motivation to achieve your goals, but from research, it may be what stops us from reaching them in the long run. Many times in life, I wouldn’t do something that I knew would help me simply because I didn’t feel like doing it. But having self-discipline is the complete opposite of that. To have discipline, you do it anyway, regardless of how you feel at the moment.
You Give In To The Bigger Picture, Not Your Feelings
For example, one of my goals was to improve at my job. To do this, I knew that I needed to start arriving at work on time. This is something that I would often struggle with. So, I set multiple alarms to help me wake up on time regardless of how tired I felt and stay on track while getting ready.
I knew this was something I needed to do to achieve my goal. If I only relied on motivation, I more than likely would have just snoozed the alarm like usual due to being too tired to get up. I would’ve continued the cycle of rushing to get ready and barely making it to work on time. I would’ve been giving in to my feelings instead of the bigger picture.
As a result, I’ve been able to get to work on time, giving myself enough time to prepare for the day before my shift and overall seeing more improvement at my job.
You Build More Trust In Yourself
Being disciplined by doing it anyway also allows you to build more trust in yourself. When doing something you said you were going to do, it makes you more likely to do it again. This is how you can become consistent as well and improve your skills.
Discipline and consistency go hand in hand when achieving your goals. Over time, it will become a habit, and you will do it without forcing yourself to think about it.
Just Do It Anyway
In conclusion, you can still use motivation to achieve your goals. It is what inspires you to create the goal in the first place. But on those days where you are totally out of it and you don’t feel like doing anything, that’s where self-discipline comes in. So, when it’s hard to keep going, remember where you’ll be in the long run if you get up and just do it anyway.
