met gala 2022 recap: my favorite looks and moments

The Met Gala is here again in just less than a year. It is finally back with its tradition of being held on the first Monday in May. The gala’s schedule has varied in the past years due to the pandemic. Last year’s theme was In America: An Lexicon of Fashion, which celebrated American designers, as well as cultural, political, and social events that occurred during the pandemic. This caused a lot of discussion due to so many feelings that the attendees misunderstood the dress code. This year’s theme was part two of last year’s called, In America: An Anthology of Fashion – Gilded Glamour. This is built around the tenets of American style and celebrates unsung heroes of US design. It has more of a clear direction than last year’s, which was confusing for some. Therefore, many hoped that the attendees would use their time to study it and prepare better looks.

But, by reading the responses on social media, the reaction is pretty much the same as before. People are upset that many celebrities completely missed the theme again. Also, it did not help that many of the most anticipated stars, such as Rihanna and Zendaya, were not in attendance. Overall, there was a lot of disappointment in this year’s gala.

Even though there were a lot of misses this year, there were still some breathtaking looks, and they made an effort to stay on theme.

So, here are some of my top favorite looks and moments for the Met Gala 2022!

1.) Blake Lively

Blake is someone that will never disappoint at the Met Gala. This dress was one of the most talked about of the night. Blake’s look was designed by Atelier Versace. It was inspired by and paid tribute to the architecture of New York City, such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Her dress even matched the carpet, which has become a tradition for her. It was one of everyone’s favorites and will go down in history as one of the best Met Gala looks ever!

2.) Billie Ellish

Billie’s look was custom-designed by Gucci. She stayed entirely on the theme and perfectly captured the aura of the Victorian Age. She combined this look with her own unique style. Her dress was eco-friendly and made with upcycled materials. Everyone absolutely loved it!

3.) Laura Harrier

This look was most definitely one of my favorites of the night. This dress was a custom H&M dress that shocked everyone. Many did not know that the brand did custom dresses for events like this. It was inspired by the 1800s era with a darker and metallic edge. Everyone thought that she looked like a princess. Laura truly embodied the look of Gilded Age royalty!

4.) Gemma Chan

Gemma’s look was designed by Louis Vuitton. This dress was chosen from their iconic archives. I thought this look was very creative with the unique structure of the dress and the metallic color. She looked amazing and really stood out on the Met Gala carpet!

5.) Sarah Jessica Parker

This dress was designed by Christopher John Rogers. This look had a historical meaning, inspired by Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, the first black female fashion designer in the White House. She was the official dressmaker to the First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln. It really captured the essence and the historical importance of the Gilded Age.

6.) Cardi B

Cardi’s dress was designed by Atelier Versace. She personally arrived with the legendary Donatella Versace herself in a Versace convertible. I loved the gold chains which flowed around her dress with the matching jewelry. The dress took over 1,300 hours to make by 20 different craftsmen. It was also heavy to wear due to the weight of the chains. She looked regal and glamourous. I think this look secures Cardi’s spot as one of the most influential muses in fashion.

7.) Lizzo

Lizzo’s look was custom-designed by Thom Browne. She made her grand entrance on the Met Gala carpet showing off her talent. She captured everyone’s attention by playing her flute. She made a statement with her long black embroidered cape and corset dress. She always gives you iconic looks while pushing fashion boundaries!

8.) Madelaine Petsch

Madelaine’s bright yellow patterned dress was custom-designed by Moschino. The puffed sleeves and mermaid train made her stand out on the carpet. Her makeup was inspired by paintings of that era. She even wore a 24-karat gold leaf on her eyes. She looked golden, and you couldn’t help but look her way!

9.) Kiki Layne

Kiki Layne is also someone who never disappoints on the Met Gala carpet. Every time she arrives, she truly makes a statement. This dress was custom-designed by Prabal Gurung. I thought this look was very different than the typical gilded age attire. Her pink florals and bold afro were memorizing. Her look represented the balance of enslaved African Americans and the elite African Americans of the Gilded Age. Her makeup looked bright and elegant, with pink flower petals hand-picked from her dress placed across her lids. It was a true celebration of black beauty!

10.) Evan Mock

Evan was one of the few males that followed the theme this year. This look was designed by the brand, Head of State. I loved his puffed collar with his corset. The cream suit with his wide-legged pants also gave him a unique look. His pink hair and bold jewelry also really made this look stand out. This look was not what you would usually expect on the Met carpet. It was a great mix of masculinity and femininity!
